The city of Nizwa is one of Oman’s oldest settlements. Long a centre of religion, education, trade and the arts, it sits on a vast plain surrounded by date palm plantations, backed by the peaks of the Hajar Mountains.

Here you can explore the colossal 17th century fort, a fascinating maze of courtyards and towers, whilst the vibrant souk is a testament to the city’s trading past, with a wealth of wares to browse.

Nizwa is also the perfect base to explore the Hajar Mountains - you can easily discover the wadis and fruit plantations of Jabul Akhdar and Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak. Travelling to these sights will give you a glimpse into a more rural life here, the foothills dotted with quaint villages with lovely old houses and striking agricultural terraces.
